Question : If you have a normal distribution of a random variable x, with a mean of 56 and standard deviation of 8: What is the probability that the random variable x will be within plus or minus 1 standard deviation of the mean?

Answer :

Using the properties of the normal distribution, we know that 68% of the values will fall within +/- one standard deviation of the mean. You don't need the data provided to answer this, however, given that data, we can say further, than 68% of the values will fall between 64 and 48. Remember the 68, 95, 99 rule, that's the percent of values covered by 1,2 and 3 standard deviations +/- the mean.
