Question : Joe received a z score of -1.50 on a classroom test. This means that, compared to his classmates, Joe's score was...?

Answer : Joe’s score was worse. You can tell just by looking at the sign of the z-score. Assuming a higher test score is better, then a z of -1.50 indicates that Joe scored 1.5 standard deviations BELOW the average of the class. Using the area under the normal curve tells us that Joe scored in about the 7th percentile (area =.068), in other words, about 93% of the class scored higher than Joe...Joe need to study harder on the next test! You can take a z-score and get the percentile using the Percentile to Z-score calculator
